DIY Welcome Basket

I absolutely love hosting friends and family in our home. But unfortunately, our house is not ideal for overnight guests. We have two guest bedrooms upstairs but our old cape cod's bathroom is downstairs. So I have been on the lookout for creative ways to make our guests' visits more comfortable so that they keep coming back. Fortunately, I stumbled upon this perfect guest welcome basket idea on The Project Girl blog several weeks ago.

Could her basket be any cuter? Needless to say, her post completely inspired me just in time for my parent's visit this past weekend.
I also found more inspiration for my welcome basket during our anniversary weekend in Williamsburg.
The Fife and Drum, our home for the weekend, presented all of our towels like this which I loved and had to snap a picture of as soon as we arrived. The twine keeps each guests towel, wash cloth, and hand towel neatly together and I just knew this idea would come in handy one day!

So armed with my inspiration photos on Thursday night, I sat down to create my own welcome basket.
Basket-World Market $14.99
Gold Sticky Letters-Michaels $4.99
Twine-Michaels $1.79
Using my favorite tool, a hot glue gun, I applied each letter to the fabric on the basket.
I then gathered goodies for the welcome basket with our guests in mind.
I included:
  • 1 flashlight (for late night trips downstairs to the bathroom)
  • 2 bottles of water
  • 3 Kiehl's skin care samples-face wash, face cream, spf face lotion (I knew those free samples from every Kiehl's purchase we've made over the years would come in handy one day)
  • Travel shampoo, conditioner, shower cap, and body wash (I have been collecting toiletries from hotels and resorts over the years in hopes of using them in a guest room one day. These are from The Greenbrier)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Tissues
  • Nail file
  • Godiva dark chocolate almonds
  • Archer Farms Trail mix
  • Altoids
I then tied each towel set together with pieces of twine.
Finally, I arranged everything inside the basket and put it on the guest bed.
The welcome basket was a huge hit with my parents this weekend and I can't wait to fill it for other guests in the future. I hope to personalize the items in the basket for each guest with their favorite snacks and drinks.

How do you make your house guests feel at home?

  9. Your basket turned out great. I totally copied your idea when you pinned that picture a few weeks ago. We had lots of company helping me play 'nurse' to my husband and they loved the baskets.

I used pretty much the same toiletries & stuff and threw in a couple magazines that appealed to their interests, too.
